Multi-Criteria Optimization for the Decision Making in Building Envelope Thermal Design

Abstract The increase of energy utilization reinforced the need reducing primary consumption based on fossil fuels and limitation carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions to atmosphere. Such goals aim at provision affordable generally clean for citizens. However, final decision making is hard be achieved, due not only multitude variety such proposed technologies, but also consideration different criteria scenarios, that in many cases are conflicting with each other. This paper deals optimization building envelope design considering thermal insulation, economic, environmental aspects. Life Cycle Assessment perspective implemented data criterion, focusing CO cumulative demand. refers selection appropriate insulation material its width, choice window frame material. In way, Mathematical Programming (MP) models were developed. General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) was used model these problems BARON solver solve them. respective MP include mixed integer nonlinear programming problems, multiple objective functions, as well multi-criteria techniques goal programming. According results, protection implies economic costs higher, displaying importance compensation. For smoothing criteria, a weighting sensitivity analysis conducted, showing reference optimal values formed certain ranges weights, elaborating framework decision-making without having precisely prescribe them beforehand. All all, use can improve facilitate process by analyzing advantages drawbacks various materials/technologies allowing comparative evaluation considered alternatives.
